Astronomy

The Moon lies roughly between Earth and the Sun, so its sunlit side faces away from us and it cannot normally be seen. It rises and sets with the Sun. A new lunar cycle begins; the average cycle from one new moon to the next is about 29.53 days.

Symbolic reflection · Beginning in darkness

A dark sky can stand for a beginning that is not yet visible. Nothing has shown yet, so this is a fitting time to set an honest intention and decide the small daily action that will carry it.

Prayer for the New Moon

Most High, the Moon is hidden tonight, and the sky is dark. I do not need light to begin. I need honesty.

I come to You without pretending. There are changes I have wished for many times and never planned. I have waited for the right mood, the right season, the right sign. The sky offers no sign tonight, only the plain fact that a new cycle has begun. Let that be enough.

Help me name one change clearly, without exaggeration and without excuse. Help me choose one small action I can repeat each day, so that my intention is not only a feeling. Let me begin quietly, without announcing it, the way the new moon begins without being seen.

I know that the sky will not do this work for me. The Moon will grow brighter whether I act or not. What grows in me depends on what I do tomorrow, and the day after. Give me the steadiness to begin, and the humility to begin small. So may it be.

Today’s discipline

Write one specific intention for this lunar cycle, and the small daily action you will take for it. Keep it private.
