Next primary phases
The current phase could not be calculated in this browser, so no times are shown. Choose a phase below, or see the U.S. Naval Observatory tables.
Astronomy
The Moon lies roughly between Earth and the Sun, so its sunlit side faces away from us and it cannot normally be seen. It rises and sets with the Sun. A new lunar cycle begins; the average cycle from one new moon to the next is about 29.53 days.
Symbolic reflection · Beginning in darkness
A dark sky can stand for a beginning that is not yet visible. Nothing has shown yet, so this is a fitting time to set an honest intention and decide the small daily action that will carry it.
Prayer for the New Moon
Most High, the Moon is hidden tonight, and the sky is dark. I do not need light to begin. I need honesty.
I come to You without pretending. There are changes I have wished for many times and never planned. I have waited for the right mood, the right season, the right sign. The sky offers no sign tonight, only the plain fact that a new cycle has begun. Let that be enough.
Help me name one change clearly, without exaggeration and without excuse. Help me choose one small action I can repeat each day, so that my intention is not only a feeling. Let me begin quietly, without announcing it, the way the new moon begins without being seen.
I know that the sky will not do this work for me. The Moon will grow brighter whether I act or not. What grows in me depends on what I do tomorrow, and the day after. Give me the steadiness to begin, and the humility to begin small. So may it be.
Today’s discipline
Write one specific intention for this lunar cycle, and the small daily action you will take for it. Keep it private.
Examine
What is one change I keep wishing for but have never planned?
About 15 minutes.

Astronomy
A thin crescent appears in the western sky soon after sunset. Less than half of the visible disc is lit, and the lit part grows each night. (In the Southern Hemisphere the crescent appears reversed.)
Symbolic reflection · The first small steps
A thin edge of light can stand for the first small step: modest, easily overlooked, and essential.
Prayer for the Waxing Crescent
Most High, I give thanks for small beginnings. A thin line of light hangs in the evening sky, easy to miss and still unmistakably there. Let my first steps be like that: small, real, and repeated.
I confess that I have often refused to begin because the beginning looked too small to matter. I wanted the full result without the first modest effort. Teach me that every lasting change is made of steps that looked insignificant on the day they were taken.
Today I will take one step, however small, and I will take it before the distractions of the day crowd it out. I will not wait to feel ready. Readiness often arrives only after the first step is taken.
Keep me from announcing what I have not yet done. Let my progress be quiet and honest, measured by what I actually do rather than what I say I will do. Let the light grow in me the way it grows in the sky, a little each day, without hurry and without stopping. So may it be.
Today’s discipline
Take the smallest concrete first step toward your intention today, and do it before you do anything optional.
Examine
What is the smallest real step I can take today, and what has kept me from taking it?
About 15 minutes.
The Moon’s phases are an observable natural cycle. The meanings offered here are 21 EFFECTS reflections, not scientific findings or ancient doctrine. The Moon does not determine personality, health, finances, or destiny. Your actions do.
Astronomy
The Moon is a quarter of the way around its orbit, about 90 degrees from the Sun in the sky. Half of the visible disc is lit. It is often visible in the afternoon and evening and sets around midnight.
Symbolic reflection · Decision and resistance
Half light and half shadow can stand for the point where resistance appears: the early enthusiasm has passed and a decision is needed.
Prayer for the First Quarter
Most High, the Moon stands half in light and half in shadow. I recognise myself in it. Part of me wants to change, and part of me is already looking for a way back to the old pattern.
The first enthusiasm has faded. What remains is the plain work and the resistance that comes with it: tiredness, distraction, doubt, and the voice that says this does not matter. I do not ask You to silence that voice. I ask for the clarity to see it for what it is, and the strength to act anyway.
Help me name my obstacle honestly. Let me stop treating it as a surprise and start planning for it. If it comes in the evening, let me act in the morning. If it comes as fatigue, let me make the action smaller but not abandon it.
A decision is not made once. It is made each time I choose again. Today I choose again, with my eyes open. Let my conduct, not my mood, decide what kind of person I am becoming. So may it be.
Today’s discipline
Write down the main obstacle to your intention and how you will respond to it. Then act once today despite it.
Examine
Where has resistance appeared in my intention, and what is my honest response to it?
About 20 minutes.

Astronomy
More than half of the visible disc is lit, and the lit portion is still growing toward full. The Moon is visible for most of the evening.
Symbolic reflection · Patience and refinement
Nearly full but not yet complete, this phase can stand for the patient work of refining what has been started.
Prayer for the Waxing Gibbous
Most High, the light has grown, but it is not yet full. I give thanks for what has grown in me as well, however small: a habit kept on more days than not, a reaction caught before it took hold, a truth faced instead of avoided.
Teach me patience with work that is not finished. I am quick to judge myself complete or a failure, when in truth I am neither. I am in the middle, where most of life is lived. Let me look honestly at what is working and at what is not.
Give me the humility to adjust. Pride wants to keep a plan unchanged so that it looks strong. Wisdom changes the plan so that it actually works. Let me refine my practice without abandoning it, and let me make it sustainable rather than impressive.
Keep me steady through the ordinary days, when nothing dramatic happens and the work simply continues. That is where character is formed. So may it be.
Today’s discipline
Review your practice since the new moon. Keep what works, and change one thing that does not.
Examine
What is working in my practice, and what one adjustment would make it more honest or more sustainable?
About 15 minutes.
The Moon’s phases are an observable natural cycle. The meanings offered here are 21 EFFECTS reflections, not scientific findings or ancient doctrine. The Moon does not determine personality, health, finances, or destiny. Your actions do.
Astronomy
The Moon is roughly opposite the Sun, so the whole near side is lit. It rises around sunset and sets around sunrise. Its light is reflected sunlight.
Symbolic reflection · Seeing clearly
A fully lit Moon can stand for honest seeing. What was in shadow is visible, including what we would rather not see.
Prayer for the Full Moon
Most High, the Moon is full tonight, and the whole face of it is lit. Its light is not its own; it reflects the Sun. Let me remember that whatever light is in me is also received, not owned.
Tonight I ask to see clearly. Not the version of myself I describe to others, and not the harsh version I sometimes use to punish myself, but the truth shown by my actions. What did I actually do since this cycle began? Where did I keep my word, and where did I let it go?
Give me the courage to look without turning away and without exaggerating. Honest seeing is not condemnation. It is the beginning of correction. A person who will not look cannot change.
Let me also see what I have been given. Let me thank someone tonight, quietly and specifically, for a gift I have taken for granted. And let the clarity of this night stay with me in the days ahead, when the light begins to decrease and the work continues in quieter form. So may it be.
Today’s discipline
Write an honest review of this cycle: what you did, what you avoided, and what it shows. Then thank one person privately for something specific.
Examine
What has my conduct this cycle actually shown about me, not my intentions but my actions?
About 25 minutes.

Astronomy
More than half of the disc is lit, but the lit portion is now shrinking. The Moon rises after sunset and is visible late at night and into the morning.
Symbolic reflection · Sharing what was received
Light that begins to decrease can stand for giving: passing on what we have received, rather than holding on to it.
Prayer for the Waning Gibbous
Most High, the light that was full is beginning to give itself away. I give thanks for what I have received in this cycle: help I did not earn, lessons that cost others to learn, and patience extended to me when I did not deserve it.
Teach me to pass it on. I am quick to hold on to what I have and slow to share it, especially my time and attention. Let me give one thing this week that costs me something, and let me give it without making it known.
Protect me from generosity that is really a performance. I do not want to give in order to be seen as generous. I want to give because it is right, and because what I received was given to me in the same way.
Let what flows into my life flow out again, in responsible and quiet ways. The Moon does not ask to be thanked for its light. Let me give with the same simplicity. So may it be.
Today’s discipline
Give one hour of your time, a useful lesson, or practical help to someone, privately and without expecting anything back.
Examine
What have I received this cycle (help, knowledge, time) that I can pass on to someone else?
About 15 minutes.
The Moon’s phases are an observable natural cycle. The meanings offered here are 21 EFFECTS reflections, not scientific findings or ancient doctrine. The Moon does not determine personality, health, finances, or destiny. Your actions do.
Astronomy
The Moon is three quarters of the way around its orbit, about 90 degrees from the Sun on the other side. Half of the visible disc is lit, the opposite half from first quarter. It rises around midnight and is visible in the morning sky.
Symbolic reflection · Release and correction
Half light, now decreasing, can stand for letting go: removing what no longer serves the change you have chosen.
Prayer for the Last Quarter
Most High, the light is half again, and this time it is decreasing. It is a time for letting go. I come to You ready to set something down.
There are things in my life that work against the change I have chosen: distractions I keep within reach, commitments I made out of vanity or fear, habits I defend because they are familiar. I have tried to change while keeping all of them. It has not worked.
Give me the honesty to see which one must go first, and the courage to remove it today, not someday. Let me not mistake clutter for comfort, or busyness for purpose. Releasing is not loss when what I release was holding me back.
Help me correct my course without dramatic gestures and without self-punishment. A small, firm correction made today is worth more than a great resolution made and abandoned. Let me end this cycle lighter and more honest than I began it. So may it be.
Today’s discipline
Remove one thing that works against your intention today: a distraction, an unnecessary commitment, or a harmful habit, for the whole day.
Examine
What habit, possession, or commitment is working against the change I seek?
About 15 minutes.

Astronomy
A thin crescent rises in the eastern sky shortly before dawn, and the lit part shrinks each morning until the next new moon. (In the Southern Hemisphere the crescent appears reversed.)
Symbolic reflection · Rest and stillness
A fading crescent can stand for rest, stillness, and preparation before the next beginning.
Prayer for the Waning Crescent
Most High, the Moon is almost gone from the sky. Before the next beginning there is a pause. I accept it. Rest is not laziness when it prepares me to return to the work.
I have filled my days with noise and called it productivity. Today I will be still. Let me sit without my phone, without music, without anything to read, and let my mind settle. In that stillness, let me listen to my conscience and seek Your presence within me.
Let me look back at this cycle with gratitude and honesty. What did I learn? What will I carry forward? What will I do differently when the new moon comes? Let me write it down, so that the lesson does not fade with the light.
The sky will begin again whether I am ready or not. Let me be ready: rested, honest, and willing to start again with one small, faithful step. So may it be.
Today’s discipline
Take 10 to 30 minutes of real stillness with no device, then write down one lesson from this cycle to carry into the next.
Examine
What do I need to rest from, and what have I learned in this cycle that I will carry into the next?
About 30 minutes.
